Remote HTTPS
GitHub
GitHub's official MCP server for repositories, issues, pull requests, and Actions. Use this, not the archived reference server.
The remote endpoint is https://api.githubcopilot.com/mcp/. A local Docker image is published as ghcr.io/github/github-mcp-server if you would rather run it yourself.
Append /readonly to the URL, or send the X-MCP-Readonly header, when the agent should not write. Toolsets can be limited with X-MCP-Toolsets or a /x/{toolset} path. The README’s lockdown mode is a best-effort content filter, not an authorization boundary. The old @modelcontextprotocol/server-github package is archived and should not be installed.
Setup snippet
{
"mcpServers": {
"github": {
"url": "https://api.githubcopilot.com/mcp/"
}
}
}Client config shape varies. Cursor and Claude Desktop use mcpServers. VS Code often uses servers. The values above are the part that matters.
